Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the history, theory and treatment methods associated with traumatic stress disorders. The chief learning objective is to expand upon the professional's existing knowledge and expertise in diagnosing and treating individuals suffering from disorders of extreme stress. This course also offers foundational knowledge and skills in helping trauma survivors develop the requisite skills for safety and stabilization.

 

Course Objectives

Following this course the learner should be able to:

1. Understand the utility and basic principles of Critical Incident Stress Debriefing;
2. Identify the continuum of post-traumatic stress responses and disorders from the perspective of trauma theory; including dissociative and DESNOS phenomena;
3. Identify the major symptoms of acute and chronic post-traumatic stress disorders, including possible implications for personality development;
4. Identify and discuss how symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorders may be misdiagnosed
5. Identify five (5) instruments used to assess disorders associated with traumatic stress and discuss the potential merits and deficits of each
6. Understand the utility of phase-oriented treatment with trauma survivors with an ability to implement a tri-phasic treatment trajectory;
7. Develop understanding and skills for helping clients to establish inter- and intrapersonal safety including self-soothing and containment skills.
8. Compare and contrast six (6) Traumatology Institute-Approved brief treatments for post-traumatic stress disorders (CBT; VKD; EFT/TFT; TLTT; EMDR; TIR).
9. Understand the proposed and theoretical "active ingredients" to effective trauma treatment;
10. Discuss how the therapist may effectively employ the "self" as a tool for healing
