Course Description

This course is designed to help the student synthesize the knowledge and skills acquired during the previous three courses for use with traumatized systems. While this course provides a special capsule for working with traumatized children, its main focus is upon working with marriages, families, organizations and communities that have suffered the effects of trauma. A protocol for assisting families in overcoming the effects of traumatic events along with a model for working simultaneously with the individual and the system is offered through this course. Finally the course addresses ethical and legal issues that are special to posttraumatic treatment.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course students will be:
Aware of effective screening, intake, assessment and treatment skills with traumatized individuals (children), families and groups that vary by the characteristics of the clients. Special section on stabilization and treatment of children.
Knowledgeable of family systems relative to traumatic stress and be able to provide systemic interventions with the entire traumatized family and/or other system(s).
Knowledgeable about variations in response to trauma among various cultural, racial, gender, and age groups and communities.
Able to recognize effective efforts at trauma stabilization and resolution that changed to meet the unique requirements of communities.
Aware of the superordinate ethical standards for traumatology and the respect for differences.
Aware of context flexible treatments, assessments, and techniques that work across contexts.
