Founded by Dr. Charles Figley, the International Traumatology Institute of the University of South Florida, was created to provide consistant, professional training in working with trauma. The Institute provides various levels of certification for professionals working in the field of trauma. It has recently been absorbed by the Academy of Traumatology and is under the continued guidance of Dr. Figley.
The Field Traumatology Certification is for professionals and para professionals who respond to the immediate needs of a traumatic event. These responders go into the field to help those experiencing a traumatic event, providing Defusing, Individual Debriefing and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing(CISD).
Certified Traumatologist is for professionals working with trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The training includes and introduction to the main treatment types for trauma, the effects of trauma on abults, children and family systems. The ciriculum includes training in one of 5 modes of treatment: Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Hypnosis, Cognitive Behavorial Therapy (CBT), and Time-Limited TraumaTherapy with Video Dialogue Technique.
Classes include Field Traumatology (T 1001), Clinical Approaches(T-1002), Child, Family and Community Traumatology(T-1003), Trauma Treatments (T-1004) and Supervision (T1005)
If you think you have had training which equals the Traumatology Institute's classes you can apply for credit and waive those courses you have qualified for. To apply just complete the Equivalency application and fax or mail it to the Institute.
